National Pollutant Inventory

General information

About us

Australia's National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) is an internet database designed to provide the community, industry and government with information on the types and amounts of 93 toxic substances being emitted to the environment. More than 4000 industrial facilities now estimate and report annually on their emissions and these data are made available to the public.

The NPI is a collaborative program between the Australian, state and territory governments established under the NPI National Environment Protection Measure (NEPM) in 1998.

The NPI is based on similar international inventories known as pollutant release and transfer registers (PRTRs), which were developed in response to demand from community groups for greater access to information about industrial emissions in their local environment.
