About the NPI
Each year, industrial facilities in Australia are required to work out if they need to report estimates of their emissions of the substances listed on the NPI to the government
To help facility operators or managers do this the NPI Guide and Reporting form have been published by
the Department of the Environment and Heritage. The guide is a component of the National Industry Handbook for reporting emissions. If, in a reporting period, a facility uses more than a certain amount of one or more substances on the NPI reporting list, or consumes more than a specified amount of fuel or electric power, or emits more than a certain amount of nitrogen or phosphorus, then it is required to estimate and report emissions of those substances to the relevant State or Territory environment agency for that reporting period.
