Database help
Data accessibility
All Australian industrial facilities which meet the reporting criteria are required to submit annual reports of their emissions and transfers of NPI substances in waste. These reports are published on or before 31 March each year for the preceding financial year.
If any of the data needs to be amended after the 31 March publication, this will usually occur approximately three months later and all the changes will be listed.
At different times searches and tools will not be available due to maintenance required on the database. An example of this is the period before the data is published at the end of March every year.
Report on my local area
On the Location search, type in your postcode. If you live in the Northern Territory, please remember to put in your leading zero on your 4 digit postcode.
Only one location criteria can be searched for at a time.

About the location report
The report is divided into four sections:
- heading section with information about the report and a link to a "Reporting Facilities Only" view of the same report
- table of contents for the report and links to any additional reports available
- source summary giving emissions statistics and a pie chart of major sources for the area
- detailed table of major emissions/sources for each substance.
What emissions are included?
All emission estimates from reporting facilities for the latest reporting year and any available supplementary estimates of emissions to air from other sources such as motor vehicles, light industry and community activities. Estimates of emissions to water from small industrial activities and broadacre land use are not included, except in reports at the state/territory (or higher) level.
Useful tips and other reports for your area
- To restrict your current report to reporting facilities only, click "Reporting Facilities Only" in the header of your report.
- To get a report listing facilities in your area, click on "Facilities in this area" link in the table of contents
- Using the main table
- To sort the main table of the report by largest emission (instead of alphabetically), click on "sort by total emission" at the top of the first column.
- To get a report for a particular substance, click on the substance name in the first column of the table
- To get a report for a particular source, click on the source name in the third column of the table
Find a facility by name
- On the Facility search, type in the facility name. Keep it short, if you are too specific you may not get a match.
- Click on the link in the table of contents "List of Facilities" or scroll directly to the bottom of the report returned
- Click on the relevant entry in the facility list to get a full report on the facility you want
The individual facility report
The facility report is divided into five sections:
- heading section with information about the report
- table of contents for the report and links to any additional reports available for this current year
- company details including name and address
- emissions table
- emission reduction activities
Useful tips
- To compare the facility's emissions over time, click on the "Other Years' Report(s) links just under the "Company Details" heading
- The "Ranking" column on the emissions table compares how the facility ranks against the largest emission reported to the NPI for each substance
- For background information on a substance reported, click on the substance name.
Tips for finding a facility
If a search by name fails there are other options.
- Do a Location search for the relevant postcode or Local Government Area.
- Do a Source search by ANZSIC Group or ANZSIC Class for the relevant state or territory.
- Review facilities in the general area via the interactive map.
- Download facility data for your State/Territory and see if you can find the right facility by searching the address field.
If none of these options work, it may be that this facility has not reported to the NPI for this year.
Report on a substance
- Go to the Substances search page
- Choose a substance from the list
- Choose an area to report on (if you leave blank you get a report for all of Australia)
- Click "Search"
The substance report
The report is divided into four sections:
- heading section with information about the report and a link to a "Reporting Facilities Only" view of the same report
- table of contents for the report and links to any additional reports available
- statistical summary and pie chart of sources
- detailed table of emissions by source.
Substance fact sheets
Substance fact sheets - give general information give general information of the physical, chemical, environmental and health effects of the NPI substances.
Report on an industry or source
- Go to the Sources search page
- Choose a source from the list
- Choose an area to report on (if you leave blank you get a report for all of Australia)
- Click "Search"
The big picture
If you do not specify a location in your search you will automatically be given a "national" report of all the information in the database relevant to your query. Use this approach to get a summary report for all of Australia from the "location report" or a national report for a particular substance or source.
Make a map
Explore the NPI data using the Make a map tool. Zoom into an area by drawing a box on the map indicating your area of interest or use the "find address" function to go directly to a street address. Use the query functions to locate and report on industrial facilities of interest or simply click on a facility point to get a full report. Detailed help notes are available via the map itself.
Geographic datum
The NPI uses the GDA 94 geographic datum.
Comparing reported emissions over time
For an individual facility
Links to previous NPI reports for a given facility are available via the "Other Years' reports heading of the current facility report.
For an industry sector
To give a quick overview of how reported emissions of a given industry sector have varied over time.
- Go to the Sources search.
- Select an ANZSIC Group and refine your search by location if required
- Obtain your report and print it out
- Repeat the procedure for the previous year
- You now have two reports that summarise
- how many facilities reported in each year
- total emission reported for each substance
If you wish to conduct a detailed analysis of the data, please use the spreadsheet function described in the following section.
Spreadsheets
The spreadsheets option allows you to download emission data in a form suitable for loading into a spreadsheet or database. Select the data of interest from the options available. The data will be returned directly to your browser or if you supply an email it will be emailed to you immediately as a zipped tab delimited file. Unzip the file and load into your analysis software of choice.
