Database
Please note data is updated on a regular basis, see Data Changes Notification Page for information on recent corrections/additions to NPI data.
NPI data includes emission estimations prepared by individual large facilities, and air and water emissions for other sources (estimated by State and Territory Governments) and background information on substances, including health and environmental effects.
All Australian industrial facilities which meet the reporting criteria are required to submit annual reports of their emissions. These reports are published on or before 31 January each year for the preceding financial year.
At different times searches and tools will not be available due to maintenance required on the database. An example of this is the period before the data is published at the end of January every year.
States and territories undertake estimates of emissions from other sources to give a more comprehensive picture of emissions. Air emissions estimates are available for light industry, transport and domestic activities in all major cities and many regional centres. The water estimations cover emissions of nutrients from landuse and light industry, and are for the Murray Darling Basin and selected urban and regional catchments. These State/Territory supplementary estimates are updated less frequently than the data supplied by the reporting facilities and data currency ranges from 1997 onwards.

The disclaimer has further information about the use of NPI data.
On the Database Search page, type in your Postcode. If you live in the Northern Territory, please remember to put in your leading zero on your 4 digit postcode.
Only one location criteria can be searched for at a time.

The report is divided into 4 Sections:
What emissions are included?
All emission estimates from reporting facilities for the latest reporting year and any available supplementary estimates of emissions to air from other sources such as driving motor vehicles, light industry and community activities. Estimates of emissions to water from small industrial activities and broadacre land use are not included, except in reports at the State/Territory (or higher) level.
The facility report is divided into 5 Sections:
If a search by name fails there are other options.
If none of these options work, it may be that this facility has not reported to the NPI for this year.
The report is divided into 4 Sections:
Substance Profiles - give general information give general information of the physical, chemical, environmental and health effects of the NPI Substances.
If you do not specify a location in your search you will automatically be given a "national" report of all the information in the database relevant to your query. Use this approach to get a summary report for all of Australia from the "location report" or a National report for a particular substance or Industry Type.
Explore the NPI data using the Map Maker tool. Zoom into an area by drawing a box on the map indicating your area of interest or use the "find address" function to go directly to a street address. Use the query functions to locate and report on industrial facilities of interest or simply click on a facility point to get a full report. Detailed help notes are available via the map itself.
The NPI uses the GDA 94 geographic datum.
Links to previous NPI reports for a given facility are available via the "Other Years' Reports heading of the current facility report.
To give a quick overview of how reported emissions of a given industry sector have varied over time.
If you wish to conduct a detailed analysis of the data, please use the Data Download function described in the following section.
The Download data option allows you to download emission data in a form suitable for loading into a spreadsheet or database. Select the data of interest from the options available. The data will be returned directly to your browser or if you supply an email it will be emailed to you immediately as a zipped tab delimited file. Unzip the file and load into your analysis software of choice.
