



Overview
The National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) is a publicly accessible database with information on the types and amounts of substance emissions to the Australian environment.
Emissions to air, land and water are estimated by facilities each year. The NPI also holds some data for diffuse sources whose emissions are aggregated together, including emissions from motor vehicles.
Highlights from the latest emissions data are provided to showcase what you can find in the NPI database and web site.
Adding together emissions of different substances does not provide a measure of total pollution. This is because NPI substances have different properties and toxicities. A small emission of one highly toxic substance may be more important than a large emission of a far less toxic material.

In 2008, the NPI will hold 10 years of data on the emission of substances from industrial and non-industrial sources across Australia. Now, more than ever, a data set of this size can be critical in supporting informed decision making processes at an environmental and economic level.
